In a context of antibiotic reduction in feed, there is a need for natural, profitable and proven solutions for poultry production. Probiotic bacteria which exert a positive effect on the digestive microflora balance and gut development can help improve laying performance. The lactic acid bacteria Pediococcus acidilactici MA 18/5M, producing a high level of lactic acid, is one of the most studied probiotic bacteria with more than 40 scientific publications in monogastric feeding. Its modes of action are well-documented.
Consistent feed quality is a key success factor for the broiler industry. A change in major diet ingredients, e.g. replacing corn with wheat, frequently results in evidently depressed bird performance and wet poultry litter. The key reason for this observation is the nutritive and anti-nutritive values of corn differ significantly from that of wheat (Table 1, Bird 1997 - Enzymes in Poultry and Swine Nutrition).
