Aquaculture is the fastest growing food production sector in the world and good nutrition is essential for the production of a healthy, high quality product. To sustain a high rate of increase in aquaculture production, a new source of manufactured fish feed is required.
Aquaculture feeds are amongst the most expensive animal feeds and typically account for half of the total cost of aquaculture production, with protein being the most expensive component. Due to increasing cost and periodic shortages of marine meals on the global markets, the aquaculture industry expresses interest in reducing its dependence on fishmeal through the development of alternative protein sources.
