Rising milk yields in recent years are placing increased demands on the metabolism of cows during the peripartal period.
 

In order to prevent metabolic derailments it is necessary to intensify management, improve dairy cow housing and provide a nutritionally adequate ration.

 

The metabolic stress in dairy cows during this period is the cause of increased susceptibility to disease in early lactation, associated with a reduced milk yield and an adverse effect on fertility.
