Lawsonia intracellularis, the causal agent of PIA, is widely distributed in German pig herds. Recent analyses of almost 3,000 blood samples from 280 holdings show that antibodies against the PIA organism are present in about 80 percent of all pig herds.
Whether the animals develop clinical Lawsonia infection depends on many factors with stress playing a major role. This article explains the feeding measures that could prevent PIA.
