Functional yeast feedstuff will probably be preferred in young animals' diet in China

[Abstract] For the physical characteristics of less feed intake, imperfect digestive function, poor immunity and weak stress resistance in young animals, which required us to choose much better protein feedstuff for young animals' diet. The widely used protein feedstuff with better application results in China are SDPP(Sprayed Dried Plasma Protein), imported fish meal, DPS (Dried Porcine Solubles), high protein whey powder, etc. SDPP was the preferred functional feedstuff in young animals' diet for its excellent application results. Nevertheless, the voices against using SDPP is becoming more frequently in recent years in China. That is because the manufacturing process on SDPP safety can't be guaranteed, the homology and biological safety of it is questioned. It is the controversy shaking the status of SDPP as the preferred functional feedstuff in young animals' diet in China. On the other hand, by the support of Chinese government and the approval of users, functional yeast feedstuff is becoming the major choice as the functional feedstuff in young animals' diet gradually.


22nd January, 2014, the porcine farms infected by PED (Porcine Epizootic Diarrhea) was first reported in Canada. 18th February, 2014, CFIA (The Canadian Food Inspection Agency) announced that SDPP may be the cause of PEDV transmission. In the same year, European Union revised the import regulations on porcine blood products for preventing rotavirus transmission through blood products. Meanwhile, the calling on complete prohibition of SDPP went up once again in China.


Actually, there had been many industry insiders in China pointing the finger at SDPP with the PED outbreak in 2012. After the announcement of CFIA, the entrepreneurs and experts with different views were invited by " Pigs Today " (a livestock industry media in China) to discuss the controversy on "Use SDPP or not ". In the discussion, Dr. Shen Shuibao who is the chief technology officer in feed sector of China Oil & Foodstuffs Corporation, as a representative of Chinese feed enterprises made comments about the controversy of using SDPP. He suggested feed mills not to use SDPP for considering biological safety, though the excellent application results of SDPP can't be denied. First, the safety of porcine blood can't be guaranteed by many Chinese SDPP manufacturers with lower process level. If virus can't be inactivated during the process, the pigs would be infected again by SDPP, and there will be a virus mutation and other uncontrollable situation occurred. Second, the effect brought by biological homologies is unpredictable and it would bring risks.


There are 27% respondents considered that the demand for SDPP will be shrinking, because they are worried about its biological safety, according to a market survey released by China Guangdong feed industry information website recently. None of the respondents believed the annual demand growth of SDPP will be over 5%. It has been a fact that SDPP sales growth slows and demand shrinks.

a.  Extruded soybean meal

This kind of vegetable protein feedstuff usually contains many anti-nutritional factors which will induce piglets intestinal damages and cause diarrhea. It is suggested that the extruded soybean meal be less or not used in creep feed. The fermented soybean meal can be the perfect alternative to extruded soybean meal.


b.  SDPP and DPS

The application of SDPP or DPS as the top feedstuff in classic creep feed will finally decreased or abandoned. It is suggested that fish meal or yeast protein can be the alternative to SDPP and DPS. But the fish meal is a scarce resource and its price frequently fluctuate. So yeast protein will probably be the best alternative to SDPP and DPS.


c.  Whey powder and milk powder

These two feedstuff will still be the mainstream in young animals diet in China.


d. Functional yeast feedstuff

The nutrient ingredients, technology reserves and industrialization level of functional yeast feedstuff can entirely be the excellent protein in young animals' diet. Angel Yeast Co., Ltd., the largest yeast manufacturers in China, which is the earliest corporation promoting functional yeast feedstuff to be applied in feed. 


Functional yeast feedstuff has already been accepted by more and more feed mills due to its excellent application results in young animals' diet. By the end of 2013, China's Ministry of Agriculture moved hydrolyzed yeast, yeast cell wall and yeast culture, etc. from "feed additive catalogue" into "feedstuff catalogue" in order to satisfy market demands for this kind of new feedstuff. This historic change has cleared the way for the healthy development of the yeast feed. In 2015, the market demand for hydrolyzed yeast has breakthrough 20 thousand tons, which means the application of yeast feedstuff has become a trend in China.


The development trend of yeast feedstuff in China


a.  Industrialization level of yeast feedstuff would be much higher


The yeast annual output has reached 410 thousand tons in China, and maintains a continuous growth of approximately 30%. The output of yeast feed is nearly 80 thousand tons. The development of yeast feed has been into the professional, industrial period. The select of protein feedstuff will be gradually turned into functional yeast feedstuff, which will promote the yeast feed industry developing continuously.

b.  The yeast feedstuff is replacing animal protein feedstuff with biological safety risk gradually


Animal protein feedstuff has always been the common components in feed formula. However, the market demand for animal protein feedstuff appeared shrinking with the deepening understanding of food and biological safety in animal husbandry industry in China. Although it is inconclusive that porcine epidemic diarrhea caused by SDPP, livestock industry pays more and more attention to how to replace SDPP in young animals' diet in China. The functional yeast feedstuff as the alternative to SDPP has been used more and more in young animals' diet.


In the third China Biological feed Technology Conference in 2015, Mr Yin Yulong, the academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, showed that hydrolyzed yeast replaces SDPP research results, among which were the cooperation projects with Angel. After lots of research and practices, found that hydrolyzed yeast has significant effect on SDPP replacement in young animals' diet. Particularly matching hydrolyzed yeast with other protein feedstuff reasonably and replacing SDPP can achieve a better effect in promoting growth and feed attraction.


c.  Research and application technology continues to upgrade


With the expansion and production improvement of yeast industry will certainly promote technological upgrading and developing of the yeast feedstuff continuously. The research direction of yeast feed: Optimization and screening of yeast strains for different purposes; strengthen the application effect and optimize the production process; balanced and fortified nutrient ratio.
