Farm-to-fork approach in ensuring feed quality and safety

Food safety is an essential public health issue for all countries. Foodborne diseases caused by microbial pathogens and chemical contamination in food represent serious threats to the health of billions of people. Trends in global food and feed production, processing, distribution and preparation present new challenges to food and feed safety.


Food safety programs are increasingly focusing on a farm-to-fork approach as an effective means of reducing foodborne hazards. This holistic approach to the control of food-related risks involves consideration of every step in the chain, from raw material to food consumption. Hazards can enter the food chain on the farm and can continue to be introduced or exacerbated at any point in the chain. Various quality standards have been developed to produce safer food and feed to prevent epidemic diseases.


In Europe, the Rapid Alert System for Food and Feed (RASFF) database provides food and feed control authorities within European Union, which is an effective tool to exchange information regarding risks related to food or feed. While such common information-sharing platform is still unavailable within the Asia-Pacific region, recent food safety scandals (e.g. 'gutter oil', contaminated raw fish, suspected use of banned antibiotics in shrimp) have prompted various Asian authorities and industry associations to set up quality related regulations or code of practices (e.g. China's feed quality and safety management requirements, the Feed Ingredients and Additives Association of Australia code of practices).


As a result of increasing global trade with Europe and the US, more feed/feed additive and food producers in Asia are looking into obtaining certifications of international standards like FAMI QS, GMP+ and ISO 22000. By attaining these standards, doors to potential export markets in Europe and the US are opened.

Successful control of feed quality can be said to be dependent on the ongoing improvement of in-house quality, safety and environmental standards, especially in compliance with the rules of all countries and in agreement with the international rules and standards.
