Bacteria, viruses, fungi and other microorganisms are everywhere. They often constitute a major problem to enterprises that grow animals as they cause disease or animal health impact such as weakening the immune system and divert nutrients and energy away from the animal growth and development.
Pathogens cost money as they cause production losses and non-realized income, expensive medications, most of them antibiotics, environmental impact and even health hazards for the staff in some cases.
Industrial livestock production provides perfect setting for pathogen growth, because numerous animals are raised in a limited space. Animals can cope with these microorganisms in natural surroundings, but in an industrial conditions spreading bacteria and viruses will inevitably have a negative impact on the animal growth and results in higher morbidity and mortality. Today, the principal approach of combating this risk involves the use of chemicals and antibiotics. Unfortunately, this approach is not sustainable in a long term. Microorganisms quickly develop resistance against commonly used medicines and live no chance for effective disease control.
Industrial animal production requires a new approach, where disease prevention plays the most important role. The best protection of farm animals health is the implementing of complete biosecurity system. It is the cheapest way of preventing diseases and its importance is equal to genetics, feeding and climate control in industrial animal production. All together with a proper management are the key stones of the profitable and sustainable animal production.

The biosecurity system is capable to prevent the import or transmission of pathogens across the farm. It is a system of measures dedicated to isolate the production zone and restrict introduction of dangerous microorganisms via feed, water, bedding materials, movement of animals and people. Biosecurity practices should be implemented in a daily routine operations in order to prevent accidental spread of pathogens. With this regard a sound hygiene is vital for the pathogen control. Thorough cleaning and effective disinfection are the most important tools for maintaining a good hygiene in animal premises. Cleaning with detergents and wise selection of disinfectant can decrease significantly the risk of transmitting pathogens from one batch to another and plays an important role in disease prevention. The only disadvantage of liquid disinfectants is the restriction for application on clean and dry surfaces in order to achieve effective action. It is not possible to use liquid disinfectants during the production cycle in presence of animals and organic matter. With this regard some practices in Asia for air disinfection with low concentration of liquid disinfectants seems to have more marketing, than practical effect. Economic benefit of air disinfection is questionable too. The only way to maintaining a good hygiene in presence of animals is the implementing a treatment program with the dry disinfectant Stalosan F, distributed by Vilofoss Denmark.
