A sustainable approach: Focus on phytogenics

Tobias Steiner

Phytogenic feed additives or plant extracts - also referred to as "phytogenics" - usually vary seriously in their chemical ingredients, depending on their composition and influences of climatic conditions, locations or harvest time. Hence, differences in efficacy between phytogenic products which are currently available in the market can be attributed mainly to differences in their chemical composition.

Due to their aromatic properties, several phytogenic feed additives or plant extracts also have a positive impact on feed palatability.

Phytogenics are an extremely heterogeneous group of feed additives originating from leaves, roots, tubers or fruits of herbs, spices or other plants, either available in a solid, dried and ground form or as extracts or essential oils.
