A new rapid test to evaluate selenium sources
A rapid biological test, based on 7d chicks, has been developed to evaluate bioavailability of all selenium sources.
When looking for selenium based products as anti-oxidant solutions, a wide range of products is available: from inorganic, sodium selenite or selenate coated or not, even nanoparticles to organic forms such as selenized yeasts, chelates of SeMet, pure forms of SeMet or Hydroxy-Selenomethionine but also some complexes sources of Se based on mixing mineral Se with glycinates, proteinates.
Selenium incorporated as SeCys is the key amino acid supporting the anti-oxidant properties of most of the 25 selenoproteins identified in all animal species or humans such as glutathione peroxidase, thiredoxine reductase, methionine sulfoxide reductase.... However, this SeCys has to be synthethized de novo by the cells and cannot be supplied by the feed. Indeed dietary SeCys undergoes complete transformation to selenide (H2Se) to synthethize de novo SeCys.
Organic forms have long been demonstrated to be better absorbed and supplying more efficient Se than mineral forms, however, how to choose the most efficient one ?
