39% improvement in economic performance of broilers on AGP-free diets
A university study in Indonesia showed that combining two feed additives was the best strategy to reach the highest performance without using antibiotic growth promoters.
The single and combined use of two feed additives was tested in a broiler study. The combination of a drinking water additive and a feed additive based on several synergistic ingredients, showed a reduction in feed conversion ratio and improved performance index. The comparison was done against a standard diet with no additives and a diet including antibiotic growth promoters (AGP), with the goal to find the optimal strategy for an AGP-free production system.
An in vivo study was performed with 500 Cobb broilers at a University farm in Bogor, Indonesia. The growth conditions were challenging due to high temperature and high humidity.
The birds were subjected to one of five treatments: 1. Control, 2. An AGP, 3. A blend of free and buffered organic acids (via drinking water) or 4. The combination of the organic acids from treatment 3 and a synergistic blend of effective ingredients to improve gut health (via feed). The control group was fed a standard diet program, without additives or AGP. The three other treatments were applied in addition to this control diet.
After a 35-day growth period, feed conversion ratio, mortality and body weight gain were determined.
The study showed that both treatments including additives outperformed the control and AGP diets. The combination of the drinking water additive and the feed additive resulted in the best feed conversion ratio. In other words, those animals who were fed both Selko feed additives were the most efficient in converting feed into meat.
The products used in the trial
Two additives were tested. A blend of free and buffered organic acids was applied via drinking water and the synergistic blend of effective ingredients to improve gut health was applied via feed. The drinking water additive is designed to stabilise the pH of drinking water of animals. It supports digestion in the crop and stomach and maintains a healthy microbial balance in the proximal intestine. The feed additive for gut health used in this study boosts the gut barrier function of broilers and may stabilise their microbiota, thereby improving animal performance.
